The first college campus shooting I remember happening was Virginia Tech in 2007, where 32 were shot and killed and 17 where wounded. According to the shooters biography he suffered from a severe anxiety disorder. This seems to be a reoccurring theme with a lot of the campus shootings recently. The shooter has had some kind of mental disorder. So why is this an increasing trend and why are college struggling to prevent these incidents?
According to an article done by the Baltimore Sun colleges struggle with growing demand for mental health services. The according to the article, “92 percent of campus counseling centers surveyed last year said the number of students seeking help had increased in recent years, according to the American College Counseling Association. 88 percent said the increases in demand and in the number of clients with “more serious psychological problems” had “posed staffing problems.””
